The MOST Basic Question, Answered

What is Improv?"

That question is the one that NONE of my early teachers bothered to ask or discuss when I was learning improv. This is really strange to me, given that every single one of us are improvising all day long.

Wait: what?!?

No, I'm not joking. Every single one of us is an improviser. The problem is, few people realize that. Here, I'll prove it you:

• Unless someone gave you and your potential romantic partner a script of exactly what to say on your 2nd date last weekend, then you were both improvising whenever you spoke.
• Ditto for the conversation that your mom had earlier today with her favorite coffee shop barista.
• Same for the ones that your kids had at school with their friends.
• And for those that you had with all of your work colleagues.

You see it now? We're all improvising! All the time! Every single one of us. So let's address the elephant in the room: in this introductory lesson, I'll try to define what improv is in order to prepare us for the lessons that will come after.
